The detail

A pre-LCI to LCI headlight conversion, done properly

Complete Bi-LED assemblies for the F32, F33 and F36 4 Series, the F80 M3 and the F82/F83 M4. Four connector versions, two finishes and three colour builds.

The Ikon headlight exists for one reason. The F3x front end was drawn in 2012, and the facelift that arrived in 2017 aged everything before it overnight. These are complete replacement units rather than a retrofit kit, and they give a pre-LCI F32, F80 or F82 a lighting signature newer than the facelift itself.

What you are actually buying

A matched pair of finished headlights, left and right, with the Bi-LED projectors and control modules already inside. Your existing units come off and go straight in the boot. Nothing is unbolted, salvaged or transferred across. Each pair is built for one specific BMW connector, so the loom that comes out of your old headlight plugs directly into the new one.

Where the look comes from

BMW put a yellow daytime running light on the M4 CSL in 2022 as a nod to endurance racing, and it has shaped the way M cars look ever since. The Ikon runs that idea the full length of an L-shaped light guide, so the daytime signature reads as one continuous bar instead of the segmented rings a pre-LCI car came with. Left white, it looks like a well-specified facelift. Switched to yellow, it looks like something with a cage in it.

Choosing the right version

This is the part worth slowing down for. BMW fitted four different headlight specifications to these cars and they are not interchangeable. The difference is the number of populated pins in the connector behind the headlight: pre-LCI cars run an 8-pin non-adaptive xenon, a 9-pin adaptive xenon, or a 10-pin adaptive full-LED, and facelift cars run a 6-pin LED.

The year on your V5 will not settle it. BMW badged the M3 as LCI from 2015 but did not release the facelift headlights until March 2017, so a 2016 car is still on the pre-LCI plug. If you are not certain, send us a clear photo of the front of your current headlights and we will confirm the right version for you before you order.

Two colours or three

Every build switches between white and yellow from the high-beam lever: five flashes for white, six for yellow. The tri-colour builds add a third setting on seven flashes, either amber for something warmer and closer to a rally lamp, or red for the loudest version of the look. Whichever colour you leave it on is still there next time you start the car.

Silver or Shadowline

The internals are on show whenever the lights are off, and that is what the finish changes. Silver is the factory look and disappears into a standard front end. Shadowline blacks the internals out so the light guide is the only thing you see, which is usually the right answer on a car already running a black grille, black badges and gloss trim. Neither option changes the light output.

E-marked, road legal, and covered for twelve months against defects. Sold as a matched pair and shipped from our unit in Hertfordshire.

Built to stay on the car

  • Complete assemblies, nothing to transfer

Two finished headlights, left and right, with the projectors and control modules already inside. Nothing has to be salvaged out of your old units and nothing arrives as a kit of parts.

  • Bi-LED projector optics

One projector handles both dipped and main beam, switched by a solenoid shutter. A sharper cut-off than the xenon units these replace, and no bulbs to dim with age.

  • Built around your factory connector

Each version is wired for one specific BMW plug. Nothing is cut, spliced or adapted. The loom that comes out of your old headlight goes straight into the new one.

  • One continuous light guide

The daytime signature runs the full length of the housing as a single unbroken bar, rather than the segmented rings the pre-LCI car left the factory with. It is the detail that reads first from the front.

  • Sealed for British weather

Bonded lens, gasketed rear covers and breather membranes to stop condensation. Leave them unwashed for the first 7 to 10 days so the seals cure fully.

  • Switchable from the driver's seat

Colour changes are made with the high-beam lever. No app, no extra switch on the dash and nothing added to the loom. Whatever you leave it on is still there next time you start the car.

Fitment

Will these fit my car?

Fits the F32, F33 and F36 4 Series, the F80 M3 and the F82/F83 M4, pre-LCI and LCI, 2013 to 2020. Choose by the plug behind your headlight, not by the year on the V5.

  • F32 4 Series Coupé2013–2020Pre-LCI and LCI. Choose by connector, not by year
  • F33 4 Series Convertible2013–2020Pre-LCI and LCI
  • F36 4 Series Gran Coupé2014–2021Pre-LCI and LCI
  • F80 M3 and M3 Competition2014–2018Cars badged LCI from 2015 still left the factory with pre-LCI headlights, so check the plug

Step 1

Choose the version that matches your car

BMW fitted several different headlight specifications to these cars, and they are not interchangeable. Match the plug on the back of your existing headlight to one of the versions below.

  • 8-pin pre-LCI Xenon

    8-pin pre-LCI Xenon

    Non-adaptive

The most common pre-LCI car. Xenon projectors with a ring-style halo, and headlights that only move up and down when you switch the ignition on. Eight populated pins in the plug.

  • 9-pin pre-LCI Adaptive Xenon

    9-pin pre-LCI Adaptive Xenon

    AHL / AFS

Same xenon projectors, but the beam swivels with the steering. You will see a distinct left to right sweep at start-up. Nine populated pins.

  • 10-pin pre-LCI Adaptive LED

    10-pin pre-LCI Adaptive LED

    Option 552A

The top pre-LCI specification: full LED with adaptive cornering. If your pre-LCI car has LED headlights, it is this one. BMW never sold a non-adaptive LED pre-LCI car. Ten populated pins.

  • 6-pin LCI LED

    6-pin LCI LED

    Facelift cars, 2017 onwards

The facelift consolidated the wiring onto fewer circuits, so LCI cars use a six-pin plug. Note that the LCI headlights only arrived in March 2017, so an early LCI-badged car may still be on the pre-LCI plug.

How to work out which one you have

  1. 1
    Send us a photo

The quickest and safest check. Take a picture of the plug on the back of one of your current headlights, email it over, and we will tell you which version you need before you order.

  2. 2
Count the pins in the plug

The connector shell is the same size on every version, so count the populated pins rather than judging by the size of the plug. Easiest with the wheel arch liner pulled back.

  3. 3
    Watch them at start-up

Adaptive headlights sweep left and right when you turn the ignition on. Non-adaptive ones only move up and down. That single check separates the 8-pin from the 9-pin.

Step 2

Choose your DRL signature

The daytime running light runs the full length of the light guide. Depending on the version you choose, you can switch it between colours from the driver's seat.

  • White

The default. A clean, cold-white light guide that reads as factory from twenty feet and keeps the front end looking standard.

  • Yellow

The CSL signature. BMW put a yellow daytime signature on the M4 CSL in 2022 as a nod to endurance racing, and it has defined the way M cars look ever since.

  • Amber

Deeper and warmer than the yellow, closer to a rally lamp. Comes with the tri-colour White/Yellow/Amber build.

  • Red

The loudest of the set and the one that gets noticed at a meet. Comes with the tri-colour White/Yellow/Red build.

Switching colours from the driver's seat

Colour changes are made with the high-beam lever. No app, no extra switch, no wiring.

  • White Flash the high-beam lever five times
  • Yellow Flash the high-beam lever six times
  • Amber Flash the high-beam lever seven times
  • Red Flash the high-beam lever seven times

Your selection is remembered when you switch the ignition off.

Fitting

How they go on

A competent DIY job with ordinary hand tools, or an hour or two at any garage. The front bumper has to come off to reach the mounting bolts, which is the only awkward part.

  • Typical fitting time2 to 3 hours
  • Tools you will need8mm and 10mm sockets, T20 and T30 Torx, plastic trim tools
  1. 1

    Disconnect the battery

Take the negative terminal off and leave it for a few minutes. It stops the car logging faults while the lighting circuits are unplugged.

  2. 2

    Remove the front bumper

There is no way around this on an F3x, because the headlight bolts sit behind it. A mix of 8mm and 10mm bolts, T20 and T30 Torx and a handful of plastic clips. Tape the wing edges before you draw it forward.

  3. 3

    Unbolt the old headlights

Support the unit as the last bolt comes out. While the old lights are in your hands, look at the plastic mounting tabs. They are the usual breakage point on these cars, and you want to know before you start rebuilding.

  4. 4

Plug in and test before you rebuild

Connect both units and run through sidelights, dipped beam, main beam, indicators and the DRL colour switch with the bumper still off. Five minutes here saves an hour later. Seat every plug fully, because a half-seated connector shows up as a flicker.

  5. 5

    Refit, then set the aim

Bumper back on, then check the beam against a flat wall or garage door and adjust. Snug the mounting bolts by hand, as the housings are plastic and the tabs crack if you lean on them.

Check your beam alignment against a wall once they are in, and leave the headlights unwashed for 7 to 10 days so the seals can fully cure.

Questions

Everything people ask us before ordering

Will these fit my M3 or M4, or only the 4 Series?
Both. The F80 M3 and F82/F83 M4 share their headlight aperture and wiring with the F32, F33 and F36 4 Series, so one set covers all of them. What decides fitment is the plug on the back of your existing headlight, not which model you drive.
Do they fit the Convertible and Gran Coupé as well as the Coupé?
Yes. The F32 Coupé, F33 Convertible and F36 Gran Coupé use the same front end and carry the same factory headlight part numbers.
Do I need to get them coded?
No. They plug into the factory connector and work without coding, which is why choosing the right connector version at the point of ordering matters so much. In the extremely rare event that your car does not accept them, we can code them remotely for a £50 fee.
My car has adaptive headlights. What happens to the cornering function?
The Ikon units do not reproduce the swivelling cornering beam, so if your car left the factory with BMW's adaptive headlights, option 524A or 552A, which are our 9-pin and 10-pin versions, you will lose that function when you fit them. Everything else carries on as normal: dipped beam, main beam, indicators and the daytime running light. We would rather you knew that before ordering than found out afterwards.
Can I fit these if my car has xenon headlights?
Yes, and it is the most common change we sell. Choose the 8-pin version if your xenons only move up and down, or the 9-pin version if they sweep left and right when you switch the ignition on. Your old ballasts and bulbs stay with the old headlights. Nothing gets transferred across.
My car already has factory LED headlights. Is it worth changing?
That is a styling decision rather than a lighting one, because BMW's factory LED unit is already a good headlight. What you gain is the Ikon light-guide signature and the switchable daytime running light. Pre-LCI LED cars take the 10-pin version and LCI cars take the 6-pin.
How do I work out which version I need?
Send us a clear photo of the front of your current headlights and we will tell you which version fits, usually within a couple of minutes. If you would rather check yourself, count the populated pins in the connector behind the headlight. The shell is the same size on every version, so the pin count is what tells them apart.
How do I switch between the colours?
With the high-beam lever, from the driver's seat. Five flashes gives you white, six gives you yellow, and on the tri-colour builds seven gives you amber or red. Whichever one you leave it on is still there next time you start the car. There is no app, no extra switch on the dash and nothing added to the wiring.
Do I need to transfer anything from my old headlights?
No. These arrive as complete assemblies with the projectors and control modules already inside. The old units come off the car and go straight in the boot.
Can I fit them myself?
Most people can. It is a two to three hour job with ordinary hand tools, and the only awkward part is that the front bumper has to come off to reach the mounting bolts. If that is not your idea of a Saturday, any bodyshop or independent BMW specialist will do it in an hour or two.
Silver or Shadowline, which should I choose?
Silver is the factory finish and blends into a standard front end. Shadowline blacks out the internals so that when the lights are off, the light guide is all you see. It suits cars already running a black grille and gloss trim. Neither changes the light output.
Are they road legal in the UK?
Yes. They are E-marked and carry a 12-month warranty against defects. If there is anything specific about your car you want us to check before you order, email us and we will go through it with you.
What is the warranty, and what happens if I order the wrong version?
Twelve months against defects. If you do order the wrong version, we can swap them for the correct ones for £175. The headlights have to be unused and in their original packaging, and you need to tell us within 14 days of receiving them. That is exactly why we would rather spend two minutes looking at a photo of your headlights before you order than sort it out afterwards.

Still not sure which version you need? Email us and we will check for you.
